Software Freedom Day 2016


Software Freedom Day (SFD) is an annual worldwide celebration of Free Software. It is a public education effort with the aim of increasing awareness of Free Software and its virtues, and encouraging its use.

ARICT hosted its first ever Software Freedom Day celebration on 24th September 2016. The event started at 8.00 am at the auditorium of Faculty of Applied Sciences.

It was a great success with the participation of nearly 100 free –software- loving undergrads. The guest speakers,

1) Mr. Danishka Navin, one of the greatest contributors to the Open Source Community

2) Mr. Ruwan Ranganath, the founder of Mozilla Firefox Club- NSBM and Regional Ambassador Lead at Mozilla      Foundation

3) Mr. Amila Ereeshika, Campus Club Captain at Mozilla Campus Club – NSBM

4) Mr. Milinda Arambawela, Campus Club Captain at Mozilla Campus Club – RUSL

who admirably dedicated their time and effort in making the attendees aware about the emergence of free software to the world, the importance of using and contributing to the open source software, and the necessity of having a Software Freedom Day.

Prizes were handed over to the attendees who won the Quiz session. The event was successfully ended by providing each participant a new, encouraging knowledge on Open Source Software.
